This small private residence is a famous landmark in Hartlepool, situated as it is just yards from the North Sea on the headland. Lime render was the best option for this storm battered property.
Following discussions it was decided that, due to the exposure to the elements, Natural Hydraulic lime (NHL5) was to be used.
Following a survey of the site works went ahead with NHL5 using the following process:
Prior to the application of the first/stipple coat, the stone background was prepared by the contractor. The stipple coat essentially provided sufficient bonding and was applied at a thickness of 3mm.
After a period of around a week the second scratch coat was applied to a 12mm thickness. Once again the composition was one part NHL5 to 2.5 parts sand although in this instance the latter was comprised of 50% coarse sand and 50% yellow sand as mixing the two together reduces shrinkage cracks. The Floating coat, one part NHL5 to 2.73 parts sand, was then applied at a 5mm thickness.
As the client wanted a coloured finish it was decided to use a solution that would endure the extreme exposure to the elements. We used an ochre coloured Ecomortar. This was applied as a 5mm top coat and was coloured throughout so the shade will last longer than a lime wash which was the original thinking. The end result is a finish that will ensure that 36 Town Wall continues to stand out as a local landmark for decades to come and is able to cope with whatever the elements have in store at this exposed location.
