Conservation and Restoration Lime Putty

Raw materials used for lime mortars and renders include naturally occurring chalk and limestones, shells or coral (calcium carbonate). It is quarried, crushed and heated in kilns to expel the carbon dioxide content and the resulting material is calcium oxide which is then slaked with clean water to form lime putty (calcium hydroxide). Lime putty is at its best and is easier to work with when the water is left to settle between the particles. This allows time for the lime content to hydrate, resulting in more a more pliable mortar.
