Conservation and Restoration When lime based mortars crack they tend to be in the form of tiny lines. As rainwater moves through the surface of the mortar joints, it dissolves the free lime, which is deposited in the micro cracks as the water evaporates. The lime then reacts with the carbon dioxide in the air and converted to calcium carbonate creating a "cementitious" reaction. In a short period of time the cracks heal themselves by a process commonly known as "autogenous healing".
