But before the new mouldings could be attached to the lath and plaster sub-base, tonnes of Victorian ‘clinker’ had to be removed from behind the ceilings. ‘Clinker’, a by-product of the mining industry, was often used as a form of insulation and sound proofing in Victorian construction.
The stairwell ceilings had also suffered from repair work using inappropriate materials. They featured bands of decorative mouldings running parallel to the cornice with a beautiful 2m ornate ceiling rose. The ceilings needed only hand repairs, so after securing with penny washers and screws, the damaged areas were cut out and the cracks made good.
This project was very demanding, with a tight deadline, and Ornate Interiors delivered a first class finish on time for the client.
There is still work to be done on the stunning internal decorations at the Town Hall as part of ongoing improvements. We have been commissioned to carry out a detailed plaster survey for Phase 2 of the restorations project, which will include work to 30 plus rooms, including the Concert Hall and Stage.
